Call them a canine miracle

Sandi Trent of Cowichan and District SPCA holds five surviving pups that were found in a hollow log after their mother was killed in a collision with a car.

A miracle is the only way the head of the local SPCA describes the discovery in a hollow log of five puppies born to a mother that was killed on a highway.

“I can’t remember being so excited ever,” said Sandi Trent, branch manager of the Cowichan and District animal protection agency.

The story really started out as a heartbreaking one Sept. 24 when Trent and her crew were notified an extremely emaciated, lactating pit bull had been spotted by several people around Highway 18, just west of Tansor Road.

The SPCA tried several times to find the dog, but found little luck until Trent spotted it in a mill area next to Bings Creek transfer station.

“It was on top of a pile and she was eating bark mulch,” the animal lover recalled. “I got out of the van and got within 30 feet of the dog and shook a bag of food at it.”

The dog looked at Trent before it slowly slinked away from the hand that was about to feed it and disappeared into a nearby greenbelt.

Trent said her heart went out to the animal that “was full of milk and an absolute walking skeleton.”

But she also realized she was between a rock and a hard place.

“Normally we’d put out a live trap, but I was worried if I caught her, how would I find her puppies?”

So, several food stations were set up so the mama dog could at least eat.

“We did that so hopefully we could catch them all when the puppies were older.”

But Trent soon heard reports from area residents the two-year-old animal was having trouble keeping the food down.

“I suspect wood fibres became lodged in the dog’s throat,” she said.

Then, on Sept. 4, Trent learned the starving dog had been hit and killed by a vehicle on Highway 18.

“I felt I was going to throw up, I would have given anything to be able to catch her,” she said.

A few search parties were organized in the days that followed, but the hunt for the puppies turned out to be fruitless.

Bears were spotted in the same area and Trent feared they’d make meals of the helpless puppies, if they were still alive.

“I gave up hope,” she said. “It was rainy and cold and the puppies were probably, at the most, three weeks old and I didn’t know how it’d be possible they were still alive.”

Then, on Monday, Trent received an incredible call.

“A fella from a landscaping place (just off Highway 18) called to say they’d been falling trees and found the mother’s babies inside a tree log.’’

Sadly, a puppy died after one of the felled trees landed on it, but five were still alive and mewling for food.

Trent said she suspects there could have been as many as eight puppies, but instead of lamenting that loss, she’s focused on feeding the survivors and helping them grow stronger.

Their stay at the SPCA will, however, be short.

This weekend they’ll be picked up and taken to a new home with a pit bull rescue organization — Respectabulls — on Gabriola Island where they’ll hopefully grow stronger until the day they are adopted by loving owners.

“I’m happy for the puppies,” said Trent. “But this is bittersweet because the mother died.”
